Recent changes to the Fair Work Act introduced new anti-bullying measures. Any worker who thinks s/he is being bullied at work may apply to the Fair Work Commission for help. The Commission must deal with the application promptly and can make orders to the employer requiring the bullying to stop.
The measures took effect from 1 July 2014, so employers should be ready to:
- Provide training or information to employees on workplace behaviour, especially how to identify and respond to bullying.
- Amend policies to deal with bullying on a zero tolerance basis.
- Ensure that managers and others in a lead role are aware of the amendments.
- Set up the internal complaint procedures to address the issue.
